"We realized we couldn't afford the mortgage and the car payments and everything," Stonestreet told me. Americans work more, vacation less, spend more on healthcare, and die sooner than people in other high-income economies. These factors likely explain why some Americans are moving to countries that aren't generally considered low-cost-of-living locales. She said that living abroad afforded her a degree of flexibility and spontaneity that would be out of reach back home. From their temporary perch in Tirana, Albania, the couple told me via WhatsApp that their only regret about moving abroad was not doing it sooner.

Jobs in the state’s auto plants, parts factories and corporate offices shrank by 35% since 1990, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And those jobs make up only 3.7% of the jobs in the state, roughly half what it was in 1990. Some of the auto jobs disappeared because of automation. “But it is still the cornerstone of the Southeast Michigan economy. Are There Any Persuadable Voters Left?

With every election cycle, the notion of genuine swing voters seems to grow more remote. We live in an era of intense partisanship, and only a handful of states are truly competitive in the Electoral College. Like them or not — and many voters fall into the latter category — most people made up their minds about President Biden and former President Donald Trump years ago. When I asked Patrick Murray, the director of the polling institute at Monmouth University, about who the persuadable voters of 2024 might be, he quipped: “You want me to name them individually? You can be certain that both campaigns will be spending hundreds of millions of dollars to reach them.

Just 1 in 3 voters are confident in Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, per a new poll. But Biden's support overall is roughly the same as it was in 2020. AdvertisementA new poll from Monmouth University shows that just 1 in 3 voters are confident in President Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, though support for the 2024 presidential candidate is around the same as from 2020. Conducted between February 8 to 12 with 902 US adults, the poll found that 32% of respondents felt confident in the 81-year-old Biden's "mental & physical stamina." Despite the waning public confidence in Biden's mental and physical strength, the poll found that support for the Democratic candidate remains about the same as in 2020 when he first faced off against Trump for president.

CNN —About one-third of Republicans say they believe Taylor Swift is involved in a covert government effort to help Joe Biden win the 2024 presidential election, a poll published Wednesday from Monmouth University found. The goal of the purported plot is that the Chiefs’ victory on Sunday would present Swift with an even larger pulpit from which to endorse Biden, swinging the 2024 presidential election in his favor. “The supposed Taylor Swift PsyOp conspiracy has legs among a decent number of Trump supporters,” Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement. While just under half (46%) of the 902 US adults surveyed for the poll reported they’d heard something about the conspiracy theory, one in five US adults (18%) said they believe the conspiracy, with 32% of Republicans — easily the largest of any political ideology — agreeing it is legitimate, the Monmouth poll found. Notably, however, 42% of those who said they believe the conspiracy theory to be true hadn’t heard about it before being contacted for the poll, showing either a bias against the president or a predilection for conspiracy theories.

In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. He fought hard in state after state, even as the front-runner amassed a delegate advantage that would be virtually impossible to overcome. Haley decided to skip Nevada’s presidential caucuses next Thursday in favor of a state primary election two days earlier that does not award delegates. Trump could embarrass Haley in her home state of South Carolina later in the month, where the former president has a loyal following. In New Hampshire's recent primary, for example, Trump won a decisive victory against Haley backed by his popularity among traditional Republican voters. The Haley campaign has already rolled out leadership teams and “Women for Nikki” chapters in all 15 Super Tuesday states.

CNN —Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is finally unleashing on her opponent, former President Donald Trump. Although she spent much of her time during the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary focused on Florida Gov. The poll ahead of the February 24 South Carolina primary shows Trump holds a sizeable 26-point lead over Haley in the state. Haley’s best bet is that by ramping up the intensity of her attacks, she can remain in the political game. Voters in primary states who hate Trump and like her will give her enough of a vote to remain relevant.

Read previewFormer UN ambassador Nikki Haley's popularity has taken a hit in her home state of South Carolina, a worrying sign ahead of a critical primary race against former President Donald Trump, a new poll reported. According to a Washington Post-Monmouth University poll, Haley's popularity has dropped 31 percentage points in just under five months. FiveThirtyEight's weighted average show Trump with a roughly 31-point lead in South Carolina. Still, Haley's standing among South Carolina Republicans underlines Trump's strength in the race. While she may be the state's former governor, the former president has also secured the endorsements of almost the entire South Carolina congressional delegation.

A former governor who resigned in disgrace is trying to make a political comeback, as a mayor. Two members of Congress and a half-dozen other political luminaries are preparing to campaign for governor. That has forced the senator’s son, a first-term member of Congress, to fight harder to hold onto his seat. Campaign cycles in New Jersey are typically raucous and long. But the number of high-profile political fights taking shape this year, combined with an array of atypical candidates running under extraordinary circumstances, have set an early, take-your-breath-away pace.

The most recent polling on the race, published Monday by The Washington Post and Monmouth University, signals another Trump shellacking: 52% of potential primary voters said they support Trump, compared with 34% who back Haley. The poll, which was conducted prior to DeSantis dropping out, showed that just 8% of voters preferred him. “Even with a bump in the number of Democratic leaners turning out in the Republican primary, Haley is not able to catch the front-runner,” Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement. The former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. has the support of New Hampshire Gov. Though still considered a long shot, New Hampshire likely gives Haley her best chance of challenging the former president, especially since any independent or unaffiliated voter can participate in the state’s primary.

Former President Donald Trump is a polls guy. Sen. Bob Menendez is viewed favorably by just 14% of New Jersey Democrats, according to a new poll. But New Jersey Democrats are ready to toss him out: a poll released Thursday found that as few as 5% of Democratic respondents would support the indicted lawmaker in a future primary contest. That sets up the possibility of a contested primary race in June 2024. In a contest where New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy enters the race, Menendez seems to find himself in an even worse position, based on the poll. Nor is it a sign that McCarthy has figured out a way to bring his Republican Conference together. Of those who voted on the bill, fewer than 60% of House Republicans backed it. Former President Donald Trump had been publicly pushing for a shutdown, and a lot of Republicans have been listening. A shutdown may have been avoided this time, but there’s no guarantee it will be next time. Trump was arraigned on Thursday over charges related to efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. As he flails to reverse a polling decline that is beginning to resemble a rockslide, Gov. Ron DeSantis must be feeling a little clueless about why his political fortunes are crumbling so quickly. Attacking wokeness and bullying transgender people seemed to work so well in Florida, so why aren’t national Republicans in awe of the divisions he’s deepened? A Monmouth University poll published on Tuesday showed Mr. Trump with a 20-point lead over Mr. DeSantis in a head-to-head match, and the advantage grew to more than 30 points when all the other candidates were thrown in. President Biden is headed to Philadelphia Thursday to tout his “Bidenomics” agenda, hoping once again to make early headway with voters over economic issues. And for now, Biden has a chance to tout his economic agenda and successes while his potential Republican presidential challengers are bogged down, either in a battle for second place or by the potential of another looming indictment. Doug Burgum’s campaign announced Wednesday that he had received contributions from more than 40,000 individual donors, meeting one threshold to qualify for the first GOP presidential primary debate. That could be a blow to both Republicans as they take on (or consider running against) primary candidates who have support from GOP leaders.
